Do you lose strength in your hands? Those who suffer from fibromyalgia

A common characteristic that most people with fibromyalgia present is the widespread pain that affects a large part of the body. This disturbing symptom is usually accompanied by morning stiffness, numbness in the hands and feet, tingling and numbness, sleep disturbances, and especially a feeling of fatigue and fatigue that accompanies them during the day. This fatigue contributes to fibromyalgia with a low tolerance to stress that affects up to 90% of patients.

This is the reason why a study carried out by a team from the University of Granada and published in January 2011 in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, analyzed the resistance that these patients have in hand, which use it as a complementary tool in the evaluation of the severity of fibromyalgia in women.

The objective was to determine the strength of the hand strength test by distinguishing between the presence and absence of fibromyalgia and the severity of fibromyalgia in 81 women with the disease and 44 healthy women.

They measured the force of the force in the hand with a maximum isometric force test, using a hand dynamometer. The women were classified according to the score obtained in: moderate fibromyalgia (<70) and severe fibromyalgia (70 or more). The results they observed were:

Resistance to resistance in the hand that allows better discrimination between the presence and absence of fibromyalgia was 23.1 kg.

The best discrimination threshold between severe and moderate fibromyalgia was 16.9 kg.
Resistance to hand strength of 23.1 kg or less was associated with a 33.8-fold greater likelihood of fibromyalgia after delineating age.

In the fibromyalgia group, a manual force force of 16.9 kg or less was associated with a 5.3 times greater chance of suffering from severe fibromyalgia.

The findings presented by these researchers are: that strength resistance in the hand is reduced in women with fibromyalgia, as well as in those with severe fibromyalgia compared to their partners with moderate fibromyalgia.

They also point out that women who do not meet the proposed standards can help the doctor make a good diagnosis, since they would be used as a useful and informative tool.
